Claude has quietly become the AI subscription that serious knowledge workers and small teams actually keep open. At $20/month for Pro it sits in the same spending bucket as ChatGPT Plus, but the surfaces it gives you (Projects, Code, Cowork) and how it handles long-context work make the value calculation different. The harder question is whether you're using it for what it's actually best at.

What is Claude?
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. The $20/month Pro tier unlocks Claude Opus 4.7 and Sonnet 4.6, persistent Projects with memory, Claude Code in the terminal, Claude Cowork for delegated tasks, MCP connectors to your tools, file creation and code execution, and higher rate limits than the free tier. It is one subscription, three distinct surfaces, each suited to different kinds of work.
Target audience
Founders, consultants, operators, analysts, engineers, and small teams who do long-context work: research, writing, document analysis, codebase work, automation building. Anyone who has hit "your session limit has been reached" mid-task and wished they hadn't.
Core capabilities
- Claude Opus 4.7 and Sonnet 4.6 (Anthropic's top models as of 2026)
- Claude Projects with persistent memory and context across conversations
- Claude Code in the terminal for token-efficient deep work
- Claude Cowork for delegated, agentic task execution with Dispatch from mobile
- 50+ MCP connectors (Gmail, Slack, Notion, Asana, Salesforce, Drive, and growing)
- File creation, code execution, and web search built in
- 1M token context window for document-heavy work
- Desktop and mobile apps across every platform
Expanded benefits for SMBs
- Long-context work without falling apart. Claude's 1M token window handles entire codebases, long documents, or full research dumps without the degradation you hit on shorter-context tools.
- Three surfaces, one subscription. Projects for ongoing work with memory, Code for big builds, Cowork for delegation. Most teams only know about one of them.
- MCP connectors as a glue layer. Connect Claude to the tools you already use (Gmail, Slack, Notion, Drive) and it stops being a chat tool and starts being an operator in your stack.
- Token-efficient deep work via Code. Reads files on demand, edits surgically, writes context to markdown so you control what carries forward. Fewer "session limit reached" interruptions on heavy tasks.
- Delegated tasks via Cowork. Assign a task from your phone via Dispatch, walk away, come back to a finished spreadsheet, presentation, or report.
Real use cases
- Long-document analysis. Drop a 200-page contract, RFP, or research dump into Claude and ask for structured summaries, risk flags, or comparisons across multiple documents.
- Building automations and platforms. Use Claude Code to build n8n workflows, internal tools, or full client-facing platforms. Aurora uses Claude Code for client builds.
- Brand-voice content at scale. Set up a Project with brand guidelines, examples, and voice rules. Every conversation in that Project picks up the context automatically.
- Delegated reporting via Cowork. Pull last week's data from a folder, build a deck, save it to the team Drive. Schedule it weekly. Walk away.
- Research with native web search. Built-in search means Claude pulls live information without needing a separate tool.
How it might fit into a workflow
A typical Aurora-style stack with Claude at the centre:
For heavy production automation you will still want a workflow platform like n8n underneath. Claude handles the reasoning, building, and varied judgment work in between. The two complement each other; they do not compete for the same job.
Pros and considerations
Strengths
- Best-in-class long-context performance (1M tokens)
- Three distinct surfaces under one $20/month subscription
- Token-efficient deep work via Claude Code
- Growing MCP ecosystem makes integration broad and cheap
- Strong on writing, analysis, and code that requires nuance
- No training on customer data by default on any paid plan
Watch-outs
- Pro session limits hit faster than expected on heavy use; Max ($100/$200) exists for a reason
- Cowork is still a research preview; no persistent memory between sessions yet
- Claude Code is agentic and takes real actions; treat it with care (separate API keys, virtual environments, don't auto-approve everything)
- Memory in Projects can introduce context bleed between unrelated work
- Image generation is not native; you will still need another tool for that
Who should explore this tool
- Founders and operators doing significant writing, research, or analysis daily
- Anyone building automations, internal tools, or client platforms
- Small teams where long-context work (contracts, research, codebases) is core to the job
- Consultancies and agencies that benefit from brand-voice continuity in Projects
- Anyone who has hit ChatGPT's context limits and wished for more headroom
How Aurora Designs approaches tools like this
Claude is one of the AI tools we use most heavily at Aurora. We build client platforms and automations in Claude Code, run our internal content and strategy work in Projects with brand context loaded, and use Cowork for delegated, scheduled tasks. Where we add value for clients is the layer above the subscription: setting up Projects with the right context structure, building Claude Code workflows that produce production-grade output, and connecting Claude to your existing tools via MCP so it actually does work rather than just talking about it. Read more about how we use Claude Projects, Code, and Cowork together.
Security
Anthropic does not train on customer data by default on any paid plan, including Pro. Conversations encrypt in transit and at rest. For team use, the Team plan ($20 to $30 per seat per month, minimum 5 seats) adds shared workspaces, admin controls, and centralised billing. Premium seats ($100 to $150 per seat per month) include Claude Code. Enterprise adds SSO, audit logs, expanded context windows, and HIPAA readiness for regulated industries.
When Claude Pro is the right call
- You're a solo operator or small-team member doing long-context work daily.
- Twenty dollars a month is trivially recoverable from your first hour of saved time.
- You will use more than just chat: Projects for continuity, Code for builds, Cowork for delegation.
- For team-wide sharing, admin controls, or higher rate limits, look at Max ($100/$200) for individuals or Team for groups.
FAQ
What is Claude?
Anthropic's AI assistant, available free, on Pro at $20/month, Max at $100 or $200/month, and Team/Enterprise plans for organisations. Pro unlocks Claude Opus 4.7 and Sonnet 4.6, Projects, Claude Code, Cowork, MCP connectors, and higher rate limits.
How is Pro different from Max or Team?
Pro is for individuals at $20/month. Max 5x ($100) and Max 20x ($200) give 5x and 20x the usage of Pro. Team starts at $20/seat/month (5-seat minimum), Premium at $100/seat includes Claude Code. Enterprise adds SSO, audit logs, and HIPAA.
Is my data used to train Claude?
No. Anthropic does not train on customer data by default on any paid plan.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude's agentic delegation surface, launched January 2026. Describe a task and Cowork executes it: file organisation, spreadsheets, presentations, scheduled reports. Dispatch lets you assign from your phone and have tasks run on your desktop.
What are MCP connectors?
Model Context Protocol integrations that connect Claude to your tools (Gmail, Slack, Notion, Drive, Salesforce, and 50+ more), built on an open standard Anthropic released in late 2024.
Is it worth $20/month for business use?
For most operators and small teams doing long-context work, yes. The gain on a single research project, document analysis, or automation build typically pays back the subscription within the first week.
Can it replace ChatGPT Plus?
For long-context work, code, and document analysis, often yes. ChatGPT still wins for native image generation and the broader custom GPT ecosystem. Many operators run both.
